What is Menopause?
Menopause is a period in a woman’s life which marks the end of her fertility as her menstrual cycles cease due to the ovaries no longer releasing any eggs. Menopause has two distinct phases: Perimenopause and Post-menopause.
Perimenopause is the term used to describe the lead-up to menopause. Usually, a woman in her early to mid-40s will start noticing changes to her menstrual cycles such as irregular or erratic cycles due to fluctuating hormone levels and they may also start experiencing menopausal symptoms which can start 3-6 years before menopause.
If women are experiencing menopausal symptoms, it is possible to receive treatment to help alleviate them, so they do not affect their everyday lives.
Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycle & it is diagnosed after having not had a menstrual period for 12 months.
Menopause can happen in your 40s or 50s, but the average age for an Irish woman to reach menopause is 51 & a very small percentage of women can experience an early menopause in their 30s.
Post-menopause is the time after menopause when a woman will no longer have menstrual periods, but some will still experience menopause symptoms. Due to the decline in a woman’s hormones, post-menopausal women are at an increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease so regular screening is recommended to prevent or reduce these risks.
