The Diabetes Institute of Ireland
The Diabetes Institute of Ireland (Incorporating the Diabetes Research Foundation) was formed to provide the highest level of co-ordinated and multi-disciplinary care that is consistent with ensuring the optimal treatment and outcome for the diabetes patient. It is the first private clinic in Ireland to be dedicated to the comprehensive and holistic management of diabetes.
The Institute is led by the consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist Prof Gerald Tomkins and supported by a co-ordinated and highly experienced team including a Diabetic Educationalist, Nurse Specialist, Podiatrist and Dietician. The Institute has direct access to the specialist services including Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Neurology and Psychology, ensuring the timely care and assessment of patients.
The Institute provides customised care pathways and programmes for each patient with co-ordinated multidisciplinary involvement and places a particular focus on diabetic education (group and individual) that is integrated into the care programme.
In addition to the delivery of clinical services, the Institute has a large research remit. Through the Diabetes Research Foundation, The Institute has a strong international record of clinical research in the area of dyslipideamia and atherosclerosis in Diabetics and will continue biomedical research in this area as well as initiating research in psychosocial aspects of diabetes.
